College of Pharmacy

Development Information

Major Campaign Objectives & Goals

The College's research program is ranked second in the nation among all colleges of pharmacy for
NIH funded research. The research portfolio has grown over the years to include all the major
components associated with developing and testing new medicines including:

  • A unique drug discovery program for new medicines from the sea

  • Pharmacologic evaluation of new drugs to treat epilepsy

  • Unique polymer-based drug delivery systems to more safely and effectively deliver anticancer
agents to the site of action

  • Post-marketing evaluation for therapeutic outcomes, safety, and efficacy

At the same time, the College contributes to the state's economy by translating scientific findings
into new medicines and medical technologies.

Our vision for sustaining this robust research program is a new pharmacy research building that will
bring our students and faculty back together again. Currently they are located in six different
buildings in disparate sites that make collaboration and team-based research very difficult. This new
research building will allow us to bring faculty and students together to undertake cutting edge
research in multidisciplinary teams.

Additional campaign objectives and goals include:

  • Endowments for four presidential endowed chairs

  • Expanded support for scholarships, fellowships, and residencies

  • Endowments for post-graduate study

Progress To-Date

  • Lead gifts from Mr. L. S. Skaggs and The ALSAM Foundation have been received for the
pharmacy research building and the programming phase has begun

  • Three planned gifts for endowed chairs have been received

  • The Inaugural George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Presidential Endowed Chair of Pharmaceutics
and Pharmaceutical Chemistry has been established

  • Twenty endowed scholarships and fellowships are now available

Near-Term Goals

The College has garnered nearly 60% of the funding needed for the new pharmacy research building.
The near-term goal is to identify gifts and pledges needed to complete the funding for this project by
spring, 2009.
