Managed Care Pharmacy
Managed care pharmacists serve patients and the public through the promotion of wellness and rational drug therapy by the application of managed care principles. Managed care pharmacy involves a wide range of concepts including pharmacoeconomics, drug use evaluation, disease management, and outcomes research to name a few.
Managed Care integrates the financing and delivery of appropriate health services by arrangements with selected providers to furnish a comprehensive set of health care services. Pharmacists can be involved in creating standards for the selection of health care providers and in formal programs for ongoing quality assurance and utilization review. Pharmacists employed within managed health care organizations are responsible for a broad and diversified range of clinical, quality-oriented drug management services.
As a pharmacist, regardless of where you choose to practice, you can benefit by understanding the concepts of managed care pharmacy. Managed care pharmacy allows the practitioner to view patient care through all realms of health care - inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory care.
