6020 - Introduction to Modern Biomaterials

Catalog Description:	This course is designed to introduce students to the various classes of biomaterials in use and their application in selected subspecialties of medicine including an understanding of material bulk and surface properties, standard characterization tools, the various biological responses to implanted materials, the clinical context of their use, manufacturing processes, and issues dealing with cost, sterilization, packaging, and design of biomedical devices. It also addresses professional and ethical responsibility encountered in designing medical implants.
