Chair

Welcome to the second issue of our Newsletter! In the last twelve months the renewal of the Department successfully continued. In October, Dr. Bruce Yu joined our faculty as an Assistant Professor. On behalf of our faculty, students, and staff I would like to welcome Bruce in our Department and wish him success in his work. We look forward to working with you! Within the last fourteen months three new young Assistant Professors; Carol Lim, Steve Kern, and Bruce Yu joined our faculty. This bodes very well for the future of our Department. The scholarship, dedication and modern research areas of our faculty create an environment where graduate students develop their talents to the fullest and prepare for future leadership roles in the field.

We have started the evaluation of graduate curriculum with the aim to improve it to match the challenges of the new millennium. Our plan is to finish the process by the end of this academic year and to implement the new curriculum in the 2002-2003 academic year. Please let us know of your experience in the life "out there". Your comments on the value and usefulness of the education you received while in Utah will be very helpful.

The generosity of our donors contributes considerably to the fulfillment of one of our major goals - to continue to attract outstanding students. I am pleased to announce several new fellowships. Enzon, Inc. supports three ENZON fellowships and Novartis supports one NOVARTIS Fellowship for first year graduate students. Generous donations towards our graduate program were obtained from Abbott Laboratories Fund and Pfizer. Continuing support comes from the Dr. Dinesh and Kalpana Patel Fellowship, Higuchi Fellowship, and the Dr. Roy Kuramoto Fellowship. However, additional student support is a prerequisite for continuing success.

I would like to thank all individuals who made donations toward our graduate program and to those who contributed to the Jeff Fox Memorial Fund. Your generosity is appreciated! Please continue to support us. All of your contributions help our graduate program.

At present there are 34 graduate students (33 Ph.D., 1 M.S.) in the Department. In addition, 8 graduate students from other Departments (Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering) work with our faculty. The graduate students are supported by the Fellowships mentioned above and from peer reviewed grants awarded to our faculty. We shall be happy to mail a Student Directory upon request.

Dr. Bradley Anderson accepted the position of Chair of the Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Best wishes for continuing success! A search committee will select a candidate to fill his position. We hope that the new faculty will join us by next July.

The first issue of the Newsletter contributed to the communication with alumni and friends. Please continue to contact us with suggestions, memories, and messages throughout the year at Jindrich.Kopecek@m.cc.utah.edu. Your help and advice are needed in this time of transformation. Please visit the Department home page at www.pharmaceutics.utah.edu. The home page contains news from the Department, information on our faculty research, the Newsletter (Nos. 1 & 2), and other important information.

Please visit the Department if you are in the area. We shall be happy to arrange your visit of our faculty and students if you contact us in advance. Finally, I would like to thank Sue Sawsak, the Department's Office Coordinator for the design and production of this Newsletter.

The faculty, students and staff wish all alumni and friends a Wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy and Successful New Year.

FACULTY UPDATES (top) Bruce Yu

Bruce Yu, a new faculty member, joined our department in October 2000 as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. Dr. Yu received his B.S. in Biochemistry from Peking University in 1987. In 1990, he enrolled at the then newly established Inter-departmental program in Macro-molecular Biophysics at the Johns-Hopkins University and obtained his Ph.D. in 1996. Bruce's postdoctoral work was carried out at the University of Alberta, in the field of Synthetic Peptide Chemistry, from 1997 to 2000.

Bruce's research area is protein engineering. In particular, the focus is on the different forces that determine protein structural study and specificity. Dr. Yu invented the residue shuffling approach to make peptide mutants, which has shown great potential in the study of protein energetics. He employs both experimental and theoretical approaches in his research. In the future, Bruce would like to continue to work on the fundamental questions regarding protein structure and using the knowledge gained to the design of new protein/peptide therapeutics.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES (top)

This past year the students in the Department have played an active role in raising awareness and advertising the department to potential graduate students. In addition to their activities outside the department, the SAC has organized socials and an AAPS Student Chapter to increase unity and participation in the department. A few of the most notable activities over the past year include:

The election of new student leadership in the Student Advisory Committee (SAC). In December, Monica Tijerina was elected and took the place of Jonathan Benns, and in May, Mark Liddell and Ram Goteti were elected to replace Kevin Warner and Ryan Hansen.

  • The establishment of an AAPS Student Chapter (as of January 2000) with Kevin Warner serving as Chair; Monica Tijerina as Vice-Chair, Mark Liddell as Secretary, Ram Goteti as Treasurer, and Dr. Carol Lim as the faculty advisor.
  • A few students participated in recruiting trips to regional and national ACS meetings this year. Kevin Warner and Jonathan Benns traveled to Idaho Falls, ID for the Northwest Regional ACS meeting, where they participated in a panel discussion 'I've got my BS now what?' They also presented a poster in the undergraduate poster session. Ken Hinds and Dong Wang participated in the Graduate Fair at the National ACS meeting in San Francisco, where they talked with potential graduate students from across the country. Both meetings were successful in raising interest and awareness of Pharmaceutics and resulted in a few applications for the summer undergraduate program.
  • The social events planned by the SAC included pizza and pool night at Yabuts and of course the annual department picnic held at Sunnyside Park this past August.

Early in the year Anil Chhettry was instrumental in establishing the Dr. Jeff Fox Memorial Award. The first recipient was Anthony Barry. This award was established to recognize a student who exemplifies academics, research, and service to the department and/or college. The award recipient is nominated by their peers and name engraved on a plaque that hangs next to the Enz Award plaque on the third floor of Skaggs Hall (across from the Department Office).

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHT (top)

Lars Hovgaard
Lars Hovgaard
Every year we highlight a successful alumnus or friend. This year's choice is Drs. Lars Hovgaard and Helle Brondsted. We appreciate their support of the Department and wish them all the best for continued success.

Drs. Lars Hovgaard and Helle Brondsted graduated in 1987 from the Royal Danish School of Pharmacy in Copenhagen, Denmark with their Masters degree in pharmacy. As husband and wife they entered the graduate program in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Utah in the fall of 1987. Helle Brondsted entered a very fruitful research project in the area of azo-crosslinked polymers for colon-specific drug delivery under the supervision of Professor Henry Kopecek. Lars Hovgaard focused on the mucosal transport of peptide and proteins across rat intestines

They were offered individual faculty positions in the Department of Pharmaceutics at the Royal Danish School of Pharmacy, where they quickly established strong common research in the areas of crosslinked dextran polymers for colon-specific drug delivery. This resulted in a world wide patent application and the usage of Caco-2 cells for pharmaceutical screening. This resulted in a world wide patent application and the usage of Caco-2 cells for pharmaceutical screening. After obtaining tenure, Helle continued working with colon-specific drug delivery while starting a new research area of peptide formulation.

In 1998 Helle moved to the Department of Analytical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and has started new research in the area of bypass of first pass metabolism by chemical modification of drugs.

Lars initiated the area of pharmaceutical formulation of DNA drugs in 1997, although not letting go of the Caco-2 cells. At this point he has established a group of 4 Ph.D. students focusing on formulations of oligonucleotides, plasmid DNA and peptide vaccines. He carries a young investigator award from the Danish Research Academy as well as significant private funding for equipment.

Over the years they have both published some 30-35 original manuscripts together and apart. Helle Brondsted has supervised 2 Ph.D. students, numerous M.S. students and served on referee boards as well as scientific advisory boards. Lars Hovgaard has supervised 10 Ph.D. students, more than 35 M.S. students and scholars. He serves a referee on most pharmaceutical journals. At present, he is the head of a group consisting of 3 faculty members, 4 technicians, 1 post-doc and 8 Ph.D. students. Recently his work on formulation of genetic drugs has inspired the launch of a contract formulation start-up company in Denmark.

Drs. Brondsted and Hovgaard believe, "There is no doubt that the strong training and the scientific network that both acquired at the University of Utah has been one of the determining factors to their success".
