SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAMThe Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Utah offers a Summer Research Program for undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in biomedical research. For 10 weeks during the summer, six participants will be given the opportunity to gain laboratory experience in an active research environment and will be encouraged to contribute to ongoing research projects as well as to attend scientific presentations such as journal clubs and seminars. This program is intended to acquaint outstanding undergraduate students with academic research in the fields of pharmacology and toxicology through direct interactions with nationally and internationally recognized scientists as well as graduate students working towards a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology. Students selected to participate in this program will have the opportunity to work in a research laboratory directed by one of the following faculty advisors: Andrea Bild, Ph.D.: molecular mechanisms involved in cancer Annette Fleckenstein, Ph.D.: biochemical neuropharmacology of addictive drugs Michael Franklin, Ph.D.: molecular mechanisms in drug metabolism Kristen Keefe, Ph.D.: molecular regulation of neurotransmitters and neuropeptides Gary Yost, Ph.D.: molecular toxicology of lung injury H. Steve White, Ph.D.: cellular mechanisms of action of anticonvulsant drugs William R. Crowley, Ph.D.: neuropharmacology of neuroendocrine regulation Glen Hanson, Ph.D.: Biochemical neuropharmacology of addictive drugs Karen Wilcox, Ph.D.: Cellular mechanisms of action of anticonvulsant drugs Philip Moos, Ph.D.: molecular mechanisms involved in cancer
Financial AidA stipend of $3,000.00 will be paid to the participants in the program for the ten-week period. This program is funded by a generous grant from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), our major national professional organization.
ApplicationAcceptance into this program is competitive. Applicants should submit a brief letter of introduction, outlining their interests and career objectives. In addition, applicants should submit a copy of their academic transcripts and a letter of recommendation from a teacher in the sciences. Applications must be received by March 15, 2008. Applicants may be invited for an interview prior to a final selection. Applicants selected for the program will be notified by April 1, 2008.
