The National Directors of Graduate Studies in Pharmacology (NDOGS Pharmacology) is a relatively new organization, whose major objectives are:

  1. to identify issues that affect our ability to provide effective graduate training programs and to discuss possible solutions;
  2. to provide a network for continuing dialogues;
  3. to define core concepts and objectives for graduate training in pharmacology
  4. to capitalize on potential program interactions and other opportunities

The first meeting NDOGS Pharmacology was held in 2005 at Vanderbilt University. This meeting proved to be quite valuable as a forum for discussion of issues we all face such as: objectives of graduate training in pharmacology; teaching basic pharmacology to graduate students; pharmacology training in umbrella vs. department-based programs; formats for preliminary examinations; recruitment strategies; undergraduate programs, among others. In addition, the meeting provides a great opportunity for networking.

The next meeting will be held on the University of Utah campus July 25-28, 2007, and will be hosted by the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. This next meeting will also have as three broad themes:

  1. objectives of graduate training in pharmacology,
  2. strategies to meet those objectives, and
  3. issues related to the future of NIH funding.

Housing will be on campus at the University Guest House, and the main meeting site is within close walking distance in the new Health Sciences Education Building. No registration fee will be charged. Salt Lake is served by most airlines and is a hub for Delta. Salt Lake City is within one-day’s easy driving distance of 10 National Parks and many other wilderness recreation areas.

We invite all directors of graduate programs in pharmacology and department chairs to attend what we hope will be another successful and valuable meeting.
