Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology

TEACHING AND TRAINING PROGRAMS IN PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY

The teaching and training programs of the Department consist of the graduate program, which trains students for the Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology, the professional teaching programs in the School of Medicine and College of Pharmacy, the pharmacology course for undergraduate students known as Common Medicines, and the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURF). Our SURF program provides an opportunity for undergraduates to spend a summer in our Department actively participating in a research project with a faculty member and graduate students, and to participate in other departmental activities such as seminars and journal clubs.

Excellence in the teaching of pharmacology is a tradition in this department, continuing the legacy of Dr. Louis Goodman, founding chair of the Department of Pharmacology in the School of Medicine, and co-author of the world famous textbook, The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, now in its 11th edition. Dr. Donald Blumenthal, Associate Professor, is extensively involved in editing this book and its internet version (www.accessmedicine.com). A number of department faculty have been recognized with teaching awards in the professional programs.

The Department is responsible for teaching Medical Pharmacology to first and second year medical students, as well as well as for teaching pharmacology, pathophysiology and statistics to students pursuing the professional Pharm.D. degree in the College of Pharmacy.

A very popular undergraduate course, Common Medicines, discusses many of the drugs used to treat illnesses, as well as drug-related issues important for society, such as addiction and drug abuse and use of herbal products. The course uses a text authored by department faculty members, Dr. Glen Hanson and Dr. Annette Fleckenstein.
